SHEEPSBERE BAY – Comedy/Drama Radio Pilot Written & Directed by John Stephens

Sheepsbere Bay follows the lives of tenant landlord Ray Gunter and the locals at The Whale & Anchor, a small traditional pub based in a struggling Dorset seaside town that was once a tourism hotspot. Audio Factory has produced this comedy/drama pilot on behalf of Somerset based writer and director John Stephens, who has brought together a fantastic cast from across the South West.

Synopsis:

Sheepsbere Bay used to thrive as a busy port, but subsequently the seaside town has suffered terribly due to today’s struggles with the recession, economy and dwindling fish stocks. As a result the whole town is counting the cost and the pub is now under threat of closure due to lack of trade, which would be disastrous for the likes of Brian, Dick, Audrey, Danny, Kaz and Gay-Boe Custard, who hold The Whale & Anchor and the friendships they have developed there close to their hearts.

Ray isn’t willing to let The Whale & Anchor go without a fight and he is determined to not only save the pub, but to also make it a successful venue once more. However, with the brewery threatening to sell up and evil business tycoon Patrick O’Callaghan wanting to turn the venue into amusement arcades, Ray knows that he has to turn the situation around quickly or lose the pub he loves.

The opening episode provides a snapshot of the life that Ray and his patrons have fallen into in the now sleepy seaside town of Sheepsbere Bay. The pub is quiet at the best of times, barely being kept afloat by its regulars for whom The Whale & Anchor is their social hub and a place of comfort where they spend most of their leisure time with people they have grown to love. Of course, the life they are used to is now under threat.
